So last week my husband decided to run the Super Spartan race that took place here in Utah and I thought it would be fun to have him do a little blog takeover and talk about his experience! I think he is crazy for doing it, but I’m super proud of him and someday maybe I’ll be able to say that I’ve done something cool like that. I’ve got a long way to go on my fitness journey first though, ha!

With that, let’s get into it!

Hey guys! I’m excited to post today about the Super Spartan that I did last week! Before doing the race, almost everything that I heard about the race is that it sucks BAD and a lot of people quit because of it’s difficulty. I haven’t really every considered doing a race like this because I’m not really a runner, other than the one time Sunny felt ambitious about getting in shape and thought maybe it would be good incentive to work out. But like a lot of things I want to do, I stopped before we really trained that much (it’s not my best quality…but that means there is room for improvement, right? #goals) and then that was the end of that. Randomly I was talking to my brother in law and on a whim we decided to sign up, so I signed up to get to know him better and hang out with my cousin that did it with us.

Now- when we signed up I had extremely high hopes for training and really getting in shape, especially since I’d heard nothing but how difficult it is, but with everything going on and Sunny just having a baby, I kept putting it off and kind of gave up training and figured I’d wing it. Which I told myself I was ok with, but I wasn’t haha. So I started running a little in the mornings with my brother in law, and luckily I have a job that keeps me in shape. I had best intentions of really training hard, and I probably could have done more, but luckily between the little bit of running and my job, I was in shape enough to make it through the whole race! This was the super spartan, so it was 8+ miles and had somewhere around 30 obstacles through the course. I ended up finishing in 4 hours, 14 minutes, and 17 seconds.

Some of the pros of choosing to do the Spartan (instead of some of the other races that are similar) is that it was really well put together and planned out. They had a lot of booths set up and lots of staff that were friendly and answered any questions you had about the race. They made sure they had more than enough water at all of the water stations and had plenty of stations through the course. They also had warning signs that said not to do the obstacle if you don’t think you can attempt it safely. I also really liked that they did free photography at some of the obstacle stations, a lot of races charge for photos so that is kind of a fun perk of choosing this race over doing a different one.

The cons about this race were that I felt like it was a little falsely advertised- they say that have over 30 obstacles but like half of them were just walls that you had to go over that varied in height (like 5 feet to 9 feet) and all of the major obstacles were in the last 1-2 miles of the race instead of throughout. I thought maybe it would have been more exciting to have obstacles throughout the entire thing but maybe they didn’t do that because of the mountain terrain? My biggest struggle is that my ADD was kicking in towards the end and I felt kind of bored since the whole race felt like it was running up and down the mountain until we hit the last mile with all the obstacles. I’m not really the kind of person who just “runs,” so I kind of found that boring, haha.

I really thought the course was going to kick my a** though so it was kind of cool to be able to just get through it and be able to say that I did it, and I’m glad I didn’t quit (a lot of people did!). Most of it was running through the course and then there were a few walls and the main obstacles towards the end. If you couldn’t do an obstacle you had to do burpees (which I was terrified for. I have never done a burpee and don’t plan to start now!) to make up for it. I was certain I’d get through the race but I thought for sure I’d be totally beat and have to do burpees or at least half of the obstacles but it’s amazing because your body is more capable than you think! I made it through all of the obstacles except for two!

Overall I really enjoyed doing the race and it was a great bonding experience to do it with Sam and my cousin (and I’m really glad I invited her, because sam is crazy in shape and he practically sprinted the whole way!) The best advice that I can give if you are considering doing the Spartan is to get a buddy to train with you and do the course with you.  You should try to commit to run at least every other day and on the off days try to do upper body work outs and work on grip strength exercises because a lot of obstacles required that. For example, a lot of people failed at the monkey bars and climbing challenges because of the grip strength thing. I also would really encourage making sure you listen to your body. A lot of people would start hauling as hard as they could and then they would have to quit because they injured themselves or pulled something. I’d also encourage buying a camelback water container (and fill it with WATER, not gatorade!) and try to find one with a zipper pouch to carry your wallet, keys, protein bars, sunscreen, etc.

All in all, it was really fun and it’s a cool accomplishment to have under your belt, plus you get a pretty kick ass medal at the end. I would definitely do it again and next time I would prep a little better (or I say that I will, ha! I still don’t plan on doing any burpees in my life.) so that I could get a better time.
